Tired of facebook

Postby Snookerfly Johnson on Mar 16, 2010 2:17 PM

I guess I don't use facebook well. Sure, I send messages, and sure nobody sends them back and I'm sick and tired of hearing about some people but I don't have the heart to hide/ignore them, but lately, I've become bored and I miss the personal touch that The pragmatometer used to offer.

I appreciate the intelligence that you all share. There is actually useful discourse on certain topics and it kept me updated on news, economics, and even the Yankees. Also, there were interesting commentary on life, movies, theater, music and other topics I'm missing on the facebook.

I hope I can revive this board, as it is missed.

However, at this point, I will probably be the only one on here for a while. Maybe it will be nice. I'll get a chance to wander through old posts, comment, and see how long it takes until I'm noticed around here.

You know, I was just considering disabling the board. I thought (and it still may be) that facebook had killed its usefulness.

By the way, Happy Sixth Anniversary, Pragmatometer!

Anyway, are there any ideas out there that people think will make this board (or site, if a board is less relevant) more useful or interesting?

I don't personally know what the future of the pragmatometer looks like. I've always liked the person to person commentary that goes on.

I guess at some point we all got so used to each other that commentary stopped happening. Maybe life started happening to the most of us. I know Scurvy spent most of a year (or two) doing daily updates on the Yankees. That sacrifice was appreciated, but obviously, he doesn't have the time or strength to do a job many people earn a good living at, just for the likes of us.

On the other hand, I had babies and didn't have much time for anything. I also don't know politics as well as Papa, I don't know sports as well as anyone unless you are talking about central MA high school boys volleyball, I don't know music as well as Sheep (unless you like folk, and who likes that crap anyway?) so I find I had a hard time keeping up with conversation. (I'm a little better now that I watch John Stuart and listen to Wait Wait Don't Tell Me on NPR.)

Still, I always like hearing what you guys have to say about different topics that don't come up in my everyday conversations with high school kids. or 6 year olds. I find it makes me think, just as much as my current physics grad classes make me think. I like being asked to be smart, and you guys do that for me.

So, for me, this will remain (as long as I don't have to pay for it) a place to go to hear intelligent conversation and witty banter. I would like to see a wider base of people of different views who are not completely bull-headed talking-point know-nothings (as I have found on facebook). Of course, I would be happy to just hang around and be talked to... your commentary would not be wasted.

And we need to get Scurvy on a rough once-a-week Yankee update schedule so I know what to expect from the evil empire. Otherwise if someone wanted to do that for me for the Sox that would be great as I don't get to watch them (cheap cable) and even on days when games are on Fox I have something else that I am required to do.
