sham: a students' review of modern society

A Letter from the Editor

As the summer draws to a close, I look forward to another semester at 'Cuse. Not to say that I didn't have fun at Deer Lake this summer (The picture above is from a staff outing- That's me in the "Homer-Size It" T-shirt), but it has been a summer of goods and bads, just like every other summer in the history of the world. I'll break it down a la pair-a-dime a short lived magazine that served as a major inspiration for the Sham Webzine.

Good: I went to Jessica's Senior Prom where I learned Syracuse really isn't that isolated since I was the only one at the prom who knew D.J. Kool's "Let Me Clear My Throat."
Bad: I realized that Syracuse is behind, just not as far behind as Madison.

Good: I went to the Tibetan Freedom Concert in New York City early in June, where I finally got to see the Beastie Boys live.
Bad: I almost died. You can read all about it at "Sound Bytes".

Good: I remembered to bring my bongos to camp for the parent's night so I could play along with the guitars.
Bad: I sprained my ankle at the parent's night, and missed the campfire.

Good: I spent a weekend at a house on a lake with a bunch of my friends, where I went sailing, kayaking, and night swimming.
Bad: I got a bad sunburn on my stomach.

Good: I went to a dinner party for two of my friends who were celebrating birthdays. I had fun making their presents/cards.
Bad: Jessica and I broke up at the party.

Good: I shaved my beard for the first time in two years.
Bad: I hate it, and I'm already growing it back.

Good: I did a lot of work to Sham, and I created a Wilderness Page for Deer Lake Day Camp.
Bad: I didn't get the Emeril sounds as early as I had promised.

Good: I went to UCA Spirit Camp and met people from all over the northeast.
Bad: During practice I got slammed on the underside of my jaw so hard, that the pressure popped open all my old braces scars, and they started bleeding.

Good: I got a virtual pet who I named Mr. Billy, and he lived to the ripe old age of 18.
Bad: He died because I slept in.

Good: I went to a party for two more friends, whre I got to see a great movie from the desk of Mike Attebury called Dub Taylor.
Bad: Later, I was sparring with Captain Scurvy in the driveway, and he broke my nose.

Good: During my last week at camp, I relocated all but one of the old orienteering trail markers.
Bad: Immediately after finding the last marker, I stepped on a bee's nest, and was stung twice.

And so, most of the goods have bads. Most of the bads are really bad. However, most of the goods are really-goods (like the Tibetan Freedom Concert and UCA camp), so it all looks good in retrospect. It would look best in screenplay format, but my current screenplay is about a fictional day camp, so I'll spare all of you who know me the pain of reading yet another screenplay about self-pity.

And, I'll spare those of you who don't know me the pain of reading more stuff about my personal life.

Sham is back, now in frames! That's the biggest change in this issue: a re-organization. Most everything else will be familiar. There is a new Scurvy editorial, an addition the "The Electron Cloud," and of course, the Emeril sounds. There's one new, original poem in the "Poetry Corner," and I regret to inform you, it's a serious one. Can you blame me? (That's a rhetorical question. I will not respond to e-mail blaming me for writing a serious poem.)

The people at Dux tried to charge me for using their counter, so I've changed to the faster Siteflow service. However, you can still check out how well Sham is doing as compared to other S.U. sites, by checking here for usage statistics. The new format will actually lower access statistics because consolidation has reduced the number of files accessed when stopping by Sham, but I am confident that I will still do well considering the popularity of the page. Ain't I pompus? (That is not a rhetorical question. Feel free to tell me what you think about my ego, but don't expect a response, because I probably don't have time for your worthless drivel.)

Brad and Emilie's Bake-Off

Last issue, two photographs of me competing in a pie eating contest greeted readers of Sham. Everyone was asked to select which photo best captured the mood of the contest. The results are as follows:

Brad
14

Emilie
8

I believe that Brad's victory is largely due to the number of votes cast.
